Speakers’ Corner
Music theatre breaking boundaries. A project conceived and presented by Don Letts (Big Audio Dynamite, Dance Hall Queen) and directed by Leo Kay. Speakers’ Corner seeks a response to the 200th anniversary of the abolition of the British slave trade. A collage exploring the black British relationship to enslavement and emancipation asking whether we have moved on so far from the days of slavery and the middle passage.
Seven heavy lyricists including Decifer Soundz, Madflow, Shane Solanki, Skinny man, RT, Yusra Warsama and spoken word artists Malika Booker examine the concept of slavery in multi-cultural Britain. Band lead by James Yard, dope beats by Dobie. From the experience of political asylum through to the influence of Hip Hop’s bling culture, each writer will question what it means to be free.
